Hackney New School: Casting Sound Objects
This workshop explored sound and space, focusing on the process of casting concrete as a way to build sound objects from broken musical instruments.
The students began by exploring mark making in response to different sound recordings. They then worked collaboratively on large scale ink drawings and collages, focusing on the forms of musical instruments and inventing new ones. These two activities prepared students for the main part of the workshop in which they learnt how to cast concrete inside formwork make from broken instruments and scrap material, based on their ideas from the morning session. The sound objects were displayed in the entrance to the school, an academy focused on music.
