The One Day Parade, Warsaw
The 2015 STORE Summer School in Warsaw ran for two weeks and explored themes relating to our set brief: The One Day Parade. The course began with a walk through the city, where students were to identify aspects of the urban environment specific to Warsaw: defining particular thresholds, behaviours and objects. The second day saw these aspects developed into coherent themes, which would form the conceptual structure of the parade itself.
Having collectively determined a route and decided upon our key parade themes, students developed individual responses to each theme, through the production of wearable prototypes.
In the second week, the students developed and transformed their initial responses into full-scale costumes – a process requiring large amounts of material and thorough structural testing. Alongside the production of individual costumes, students also collaborated on the design of a large-scale mobile structure that would act as centerpiece to the parade.
On the final day – The One Day Parade – students processed through the streets of Warsaw wearing their costumes, eventually reaching the bank of the Vistula River, where their mobile structure was unpacked and arranged to form a final installation.
