Makers Manual #34: Textile Clay

Makers Manual is a collaborative project between exciting makers and STORE STORE. These downloadable manuals are a practical guide to making at home for beginners and experts.

Textile-Clay is a new clay-like material made out of textile waste and starch. The objective is to take advantage of the every- day decaying process of our textiles and use it as raw material. Compared to traditional clay, this alternative has two main advantages: it is a non-extractive material and has a very low energetic impact – after giving shape to the object it does not need to be fired, glazed and re-fired again. This manual is designed for people who are looking for ways to experiment with a material that behaves like clay using waste materials found in the home.
